Here at the Send Me Your Ears studio today, we’ve been listening to the latest single from Romain Swan. Call Me The Devil was released yesterday, 24 March 2023, and features Samer Elnahhal (Ex Lordi) on bass.
Call Me The Devil is an alt-rock track from Paris-based Romain Swan. It features some masterful bass playing from Finnish Eurovision winner Samer Elnahhal.
Call Me The Devil grabs your attention immediately with a driving bass line and some Enter Sandman-style toms in the intro.
When the vocals come in, they are low and almost whispered. They feel a touch menacing, which fits with the theme of the song.
There are some glorious synth parts in this track, almost Nightwish-like, and there are some real moments where the synths create great tension and release throughout the track. Some of the synth builds are positively euphoric.
There are some clever changes in the effects on the vocals throughout the track, giving them a slightly demonic feel (again, in keeping with the subject matter). The final vocal line in the stinger ending is of particular note here.
The bass line throughout this track is a real feature. It is the driving force of the whole track. We particularly liked the Ozzy Osbourne, No More Tears melodies in places.
The choruses are catchy, and you find yourself singing along as they come around again. There are some superb incidental synth lines to help maintain interest throughout them.
The guitar solo is expertly positioned, with some great tones and note choices. It leads to a fantastic breakdown section that comes crashing back into a double chorus to the end, with the second chorus interspersed with some very cool guitar riffs.

Ideas from our ears
A couple of boosts in the low end around 60Hz and 150Hz, could increase the thickness and punch in the kick drum and bass guitar. A wider boost centred around 450-500Hz could fill out that area too. A small boost in the top 2 octaves could increase the brightness and presence, and finally, a light compressor/limiter with maybe 3dB of make-up gain would add a touch more warmth and overall volume. As always, these are just some ideas from our ears.
Final thoughts
Romain Swan’s latest single, Call Me The Devil, is an exciting ride of driven basslines, catchy choruses and Scandinavian rock influences. Recommended!
